Is there an odder or more varied plant in the world than the orchid? This apparently simple flower has more than 100,000 varieties - some natural, some produced by man through years of cautious cross-breeding, but every single one a protected species.
The newest of Kew's giant greenhouses, the Princess of Wales Conservatory, turns into a staggering riot of colour when this festival takes root. Around 800 new species are added to the festival each year, allowing visitors to the show to be some of the first to see a unique new flower.
Alongside the orchids are displays of traditional Korean and Chinese flower art, and the flowing curves of art nouveau jewellery. But it's the near-infinite shapes and colours of this strange, alien flower that form the main attraction of this gorgeous annual event.
